Daniel and I had a few days off work and decided to take a trip! We stopped in Charlottesville, VA on our way to D.C. We LOVED Charlottesville! We walked around downtown and had dinner at the fantastic "Three" then strolled around the campus of the University of Virginia. It was so neat! Daniel informed me that Thomas Jefferson designed the campus and we saw some of the original dorms. The next morning we went for a tour of "Monticello", Thomas Jefferson's house. It was spectacular! We were overwhelmed with all the history of the plantation. Totally worth the trip! We found an apple orchard on the way out and picked up some apple cider and donuts. Yum!
We travelled through winding mountain roads that passed several historic battlefields before getting on I-95 and heading towards D.C.! We spent the next few days touring soooo many fantastic places! First, we ventured into Georgetown which was a cute little town with a lot of spunk. The following morning we went to the top of the Washington Monument which offered us spectacular views! Then Daniel scored us a tour of the Pentagon. We learned that it was such a large place, that it had it's own area code and five zip codes with over 23,000 employees. Next was Arlington National Cemetery. I can't describe what a sombering sight it is to see over 320,000 tombstones lined up and to witness the change of guard at the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier". Wow. Dupont Circle was our last stop of the night, another neat place!
The next day included a tour of the Capitol, walking around "The District" and past the White House, The Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and many other sites along the National Mall, which Daniel taught me is not really a "mall" with stores, but more like a park. :) We also got to see the Braves play the Nationals (ATL lost), see Old Town Arlington, AND visit a Peeps candy store!
Daniel and I had such a great time and have so many great memories! If you ever plan a trip to DC, consult my husband before you go!
